Meteor ini terjadi karena adanya serpihan benda <a href="http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luar_angkasa" title="Luar angkasa">luar angkasa</a> yang dinamakan <a href="http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meteoroid" title="Meteoroid">meteoroid</a>, yang memasuki <a href="http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmosfer" title="Atmosfer">atmosfer</a> <a href="http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bumi" title="Bumi">Bumi</a> dengan kecepatan tinggi. Ukuran meteor umumnya hanya sebesar sebutir <a href="http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasir" title="Pasir">pasir</a>, dan hampir semuanya hancur sebelum mencapai permukaan Bumi. Serpihan yang mencapai permukaan Bumi disebut <a href="http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meteorit" title="Meteorit">meteorit</a>. berpuncak akhir pekan ini sebenarnya sudah terjadi sejak ratusan tahun
sebelum masehi. Catatan sejarah juga mencatat hujan meteor Lyrid bisa
menjadi sangat meriah dengan 90-100 meteor per jam. Pada 1982,
hujan meteor ini menjadi sangat melimpah dengan 90 meteor terang setiap
jam. Catatan kuno yang dibuat astronom Cina pada 687 Sebelum Masehi
menyebutkan hujan meteor ini "turun seperti hujan". Catatan
lain pada 1803 dari Virginia, Amerika Serikat, menunjukkan hujan meteor
lyrid terlihat di langit dari pukul 01.00 hingga pukul 03.00 waktu
setempat. Disebutkan pula bahwa fenomena ini seperti bintang yang jatuh
dari berbagai lokasi di langit seperti kembang api dari langit.Nama lyrid diambil dari rasi Lyra, tempat meteor ini bermunculan. Namun
Robert Lunsford, penulis buku "Meteors and How to Observe Them",
menyebutkan penamaan ini salah. Sebab, arah kedatangan meteor sebenarnya
berasal dari rasi Hercules yang berada di sebelah rasi Lyra."Kesalahan
penamaan muncul karena dahulu tak ada batas pasti setiap rasi di
langit," ujar dia di dalam bukunya.Kilatan cahaya pada hujan
meteor lyra terjadi ketika bumi memasuki jejak debu yang ditinggalkan
oleh komet Thatcher. Debu ini kemudian bergesekan dengan atmosfer bumi
dan menghasilkan cahaya.Hujan meteor lyrid paling meriah bisa
menampakkan 100 meteor per jam. Namun rata-rata fenomena ini menampakkan
10-25 meteor per jam. "Hujan meteor lyrid paling meriah berikutnya baru
terjadi tahun 2040 dan 2041," kata dia.Hujan meteor Lyrid
mulai tampak sejak pertengahan April. Pada tahap awal, hanya terlihat
satu meteor setiap jam. Jumlah ini terus meningkat setiap hari dan
mencapai puncaknya pada tanggal 21 dan 22 April. Setelah mencapai
puncak, jumlah meteor akan kembali menurun. Hujan meteor Lyrid akan
berakhir pada tanggal 25 April 2012.Untuk mengetahui posisi
rasi Lyra, pengamat cukup melihat ke arah timur laut (pertengahan arah
timur-utara). Pada daerah tersebut, sebuah bintang bersinar terang.

meteor yang berada di langit di tempat titik mereka berasal.</span></span><br />

pertama muncul 150 tahun yang lalu, dan semenjak itu mereka
menghujani bumi secara regular tiap tahun pada pertengahan Desember.<br />Mereka
diperkirakan akan lebih banyak pada tiap tahunnya dan hujan meteor
baru-baru ini telah terlihat lebih dari ratusan meteor menghiasi

NASA DC-8 yang terbang diatas kanada untuk meneliti hujan meteor

mengetahui dari mana awalnya hujan meteor ini berasal.<br />Karena
kuatnya penampakan meteor ini, pada Januari awal, hujan meteor ini
secara tentative diidentifikasikan sebagai planet kecil yang dinamakan
planet 2003 EH1.<br />Kemungkinan
meteor ini juga diamati oleh astronom dari cina, jepang dan korea
semenjak setengah milenuim lalu. Pada puncak penampakannya, hujan
meteor ini akan bisa dilihat kurang dari 1 jam.</span></span><br />

Prominensa adalah salah satu ciri khas Matahari, berupa bagian
Matahari menyerupai lidah api yang sangat besar dan terang yang mencuat
keluar dari bagian permukaan serta seringkali berbentuk <i>loop</i> (putaran).Prominensa
disebut juga sebagai filamen Matahari karena meskipun julurannya sangat
terang bila dilihat di angkasa yang gelap, namun tidak lebih terang
dari keseluruhan Matahari itu sendiri<sup><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>.</b></span></span></sup> Prominensa hanya dapat dilihat dari Bumi dengan bantuan <a href="http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teleskop" title="Teleskop">teleskop</a> dan filter.
Prominensa terbesar yang pernah ditangkap oleh SOHO (Solar and
Heliospheric Observatory) diestimasi berukuran panjang 350 ribu km.<br />
Sama seperti korona, prominensa terbentuk dari <a href="http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasma" title="Plasma">plasma</a> namun memiliki suhu yang lebih dingin.Prominensa berisi materi dengan massa mencapai 100 miliar kg. Prominensa terjadi di lapisan fotosfer Matahari dan bergerak keluar menuju korona Matahari.Plasma prominensa bergerak di sepanjang <a href="http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medan_magnet" title="Medan magnet">medan magnet</a> Matahari. <a class="mw-redirect" href="http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erupsi" title="Erupsi">Erupsi</a> dapat terjadi ketika struktur prominesa menjadi tidak stabil sehingga akan pecah dan mengeluarkan plasmanya.
Ketika terjadi erupsi, material yang dikeluarkan menjadi bagian dari
struktur magnetik yang sangat besar disebut semburan massa korona (<i>coronnal mass ejection</i>/ CME).Pergerakan semburan korona tersebut terjadi pada kecepatan yang sangat tinggi, yaitu antara 20 ribu m/s hingga 3,2 juta km/s.Pergerakan tersebut juga menyebabkan peningkatan suhu hingga puluhan juta derajat dalam waktu singkat.Bila erupsi semburan massa korona mengarah ke Bumi, akan terjadi
interaksi dengan medan magnet Bumi dan mengakibatkan terjadinya <a class="new" href="http://id.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Badai_geomagnetik&action=edit&redlink=1" title="Badai geomagnetik (halaman belum tersedia)">badai geomagnetik</a> yang berpotensi mengganggu jaringan komunikasi dan <a href="http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listrik" title="Listrik">listrik</a>.<br />
Suatu prominensa yang stabil dapat bertahan di korona hingga berbulan-bulan lamanya dan ukurannya terus membesar setiap hari. Para ahli masih terus meneliti bagaimana dan mengapa prominensa dapat terjadi.<br />

Bintik Matahari adalaah granula-granula cembung kecil yang ditemukan
di bagian fotosfer Matahari dengan jumlah yang tak terhitung. Bintik Matahari tercipta saat garis medan magnet Matahari menembus bagian fotosfer.Ukuran bintik Matahari dapat lebih besar daripada Bumi. Bintik Matahari memiliki daerah yang gelap bernama <a href="http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umbra" title="Umbra">umbra</a>, yang dikelilingi oleh daerah yang lebih terang disebut <a href="http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penumbra" title="Penumbra">penumbra</a>. Warna bintik Matahari terlihat lebih gelap karena suhunya yang jauh lebih rendah dari fotosfer. Suhu di daerah umbra adalah sekitar 2.200 °C sedangkan di daerah penumbra adalah 3.500 °C.
Oleh karena emisi cahaya juga dipengaruhi oleh suhu maka bagian bintik
Matahari umbra hanya mengemisikan 1/6 kali cahaya bila dibandingkan
permukaan Matahari pada ukuran yang sama.<br />

Angin Matahari terbentuk aliran konstan dari partikel-partikel yang
dikeluarkan oleh bagian atas atomosfer Matahari, yang bergerak ke
seluruh tata surya.Partikel-partikel tersebut memiliki energi yang tinggi, namun proses
pergerakannya keluar medan gravitasi Matahari pada kecepatan yang begitu
tinggi belum dimengerti secara sempurna. Kecepatan angin surya terbagi dua, yaitu angin cepat yang mencapai 400 km/s dan angin cepat yang mencapai lebih dari 500 km/s. Kecepatan ini juga bertambah secara eksponensial seiring jaraknya dari Matahari.Angin Matahari yang umum terjadi memiliki kecepatan 750 km/s dan berasal dari lubang korona di atmosfer Matahari.<br />
Beberapa bukti adanya angin surya yang dapat dirasakan atau dilihat
dari Bumi adalah badai geomagnetik berenergi tinggi yang merusak satelit
dan sistem listrik, <a href="http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurora" title="Aurora">aurora</a> di <a href="http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kutub_Utara" title="Kutub Utara">Kutub Utara</a> atau <a href="http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kutub_Selatan" title="Kutub Selatan">Kutub Selatan</a>, dan partikel menyerupai ekor panjang pada komet yang selalu menjauhi Matahari akibat hembusan angin surya.Angin Matahari dapat membahayakan kehidupan di Bumi bila tidak terdapat medan magnet Bumi yang melindungi dari radiasi. Badai Matahari terjadi ketika ada pelepasan seketika energi magnetik yang terbentuk di atmosfer Matahari.
Plasma Matahari yang meningkat suhunya hingga jutaan Kelvin beserta
partikel-partikel lainnya berakselerasi mendekati kecepatan cahaya.Total energi yang dilepaskan setara dengan jutaan bom hidrogen berukuran 100 megaton.Jumlah dan kekuatan badai Matahari bervariasi.
Ketika Matahari aktif dan memiliki banyak bintik, badai Matahari lebih
sering terjadi. Badai Matahari seringkali terjadi bersamaan dengan
luapan massa korona.
Badai Matahari memberikan risiko radiasi yang sangat besar terhadap
satelit, pesawat ulang alik, astronot, dan terutama sistem
telekomunikasi Bumi. Badai Matahari yang pertama kali tercatat dalam pustaka astronomi adalah pada tanggal 1 September 1859.
Dua peneliti, Richard C. Carrington dan Richard Hodgson yang sedang
mengobservasi bintik Matahari melalui teleskop di tempat terpisah,
mengamati badai Matahari yang terlihat sebagai cahaya putih besar di
sekeliling Matahari.Kejadian ini disebut Carrington Event dan menyebabkan lumpuhnya jaringan telegraf transatlantik antara Amerika dan Eropa.<br />
